The Wild Elephants of Sri Lanka



The elephant population of Sri Lanka today is 3500 - 4000. In 2004, 154 elephants and in 2005, 117 1,9 had been killed. 50 to 60 human beings are killed by elep ‘
annually. 

Elephants are killed for their valuable tusks. Tusks  very high price in the world. Farriers kill elephants to protect cultivation. The human elephant conflict is greater today in s:f.l
wildlife regions. Scarcity of breeding is another factor 3 winding elephant population. While the death rate is hi birth rate is very low. iii

The lives of elephants could be protected in ways. People should be prohibited from entering 

Elephants should be allowed to roam about freely inareas. Maximum punishment shouldbe given to killers

elephants at Pinnawela. Twenty five of them are baby The media can play a vital role to create public aware it protect the lives of elephants. The newspapers, the radio . 
can do much through articles, talks and programmers
