Bandaranaike S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike was born on January 8, 1899 and received higher education at Oxford University in En-gland from where he returned to his mother country carrying with him the reputation as "Silver bell of Asia"
He was victorious at the general elections in 1947 by being elected to the Attanagalla seat. In 1951 he crossed over from the government at that time and formed the Sri Lanka Freedom Pary in 1952. With the enormous Support of five -fold forces he came to power in 1956 and guided and led the Sri Lanka nation to a new era.
The colonialists became his enemies because he stood up bravely for the common masses. On account of that very reason this great leader had to sacrifice his life, on the 26th September 1959, for the sake of the people.
The grave and pathetic incident of the assassination of S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike a great leader of common man who was really endowed with vision and foresight will never be forgotten by the people of Sri Lanka.
Tree Planting =
The devotion towards the environment and the envi-ronment friendly life style followed by our nation is some-thing we have been inheriting for generations. The co-exist-ence with the environment was the basis of the life style of our ancestors.
We are aware that they had a very close rela-tionship with and fondness for the environment and at time this relationship was more or less of a spiritual nature. However it is unfortunate that this harmonious rela-tionship which had a proper balance with nature was broken down over the years.
The need to protect trees has gradually moved away from our existence. As a result our over-rich forests and the associated resources are dwindling drastically. At present tree planting is a national need. Therefore a concerted effort is needed for promoting this activity in an effective manner.
The best way to overcome the many envi-ronmental and economic problems faced by a tropical coun-try like Sri Lanka is through a well - planned tree planting program.
